As an aspiring minimalist, it's almost natural for me to try to find several ways to use the same item. A few days ago we showed you how we used our foam snowflakes stickers to make a Snowflake Shape Find Sensory BinToday we're using those same snowflakes to work on counting with the help of some of our Uno cards.

For us the best way to work on anything is to use some type of work tray (aka - container, sheet pan, storage box, etc.) to keep our activity from getting too out of control. The work tray we used today was made during the holidays with a $1 cookie sheet and washi tape to make our 10 frames. I wrote on it with dry erase marker, which can be cleaned off with by washing the tray.

How We Play

There is no wrong way to play. I have created 3 ways for preschoolers to play and listed them from easy to difficult. I removed all of the action cards (ie: Draw 2, Draw 4, Wild, Skip, etc.) for Little Bear because he's too young to understand that right now, but you can easily make a game out of it if there are 2 or more players by keeping the cards in the deck. Here are a few ways to play:

  • Place 5-20 cards face down. Flipping one card at a time into a discard pile, place the correct number of snowflake stickers in the 10 frame. Clear the board and start over.
  • Place 10 cards face down. Flipping one card at a time into a discard pile, add or subtract the value of the card from the 10 frame.
    • Example: The first card flipped is 2. Place 2 counters in the 10 frame.
    • The second card flipped is 9. Add 7 counters to reach to 9th square.
    • The 3rd card is a 4. Subtract 5 counters to reach the 4th square. Continue until the deck is completed
  • Place 1/2 of the cards face down.
Continue until the deck is completed.
FOR 2 or MORE PLAYERS
This game could also be played on larger frames (up to a 50 frame mat) for additional practice with counting by 10's.
  • Place all of the cards (including action cards) face down. Each player will begin with 10 counters. Take turns flipping one card per turn into a discard pile and add or subtract the value of the card from the 10 frame.
    • Example: The first card flipped is 2. Place 2 counters in the 10 frame.
    • The second card flipped is 9. Add 7 counters to reach to 9th square.
    • The 3rd card is a 4. Subtract 5 counters to reach the 4th square. Continue until the deck is completed.
  • When a player reaches the first square they must call out "Uno." The first player to clear their board wins.
