13 Christmas and Holiday Books for Kids

One of our Christmas traditions this year was to read a new holiday book each night in December. Because we're limited on space, most of our books came from our local library. The books we do own tend to be compilation books and have 4-6 stories in each. I have listed our favorite 13 Christmas and holiday books which have over 25 stories, poems, songs, and rhymes. There are so many wonderful options out there that it would be a great feat to list them all, so if we missed any of your favorites feel free to share your selections in the comments. Here were our favorite holiday books this year.

"A beautifully illustrated picture book that depicts a poor Mexican boy in his search for a special gift for the Baby Jesus, The Girl of the Poinsettia/El Regalo de la Flor de Nochebuena focuses on the Mexican tradition of las posadas in which villagers reenact Mary and Joseph's search for shelter for nine nights. Traveling from house to house, night after night, Carlos worries each day about the gift he cannot afford to give the Baby Jesus on Christmas Eve. Ultimately, Carlos learns that love is the best gift of all."

Harry and the Dinosaurs Make A Christmas Wish "This is a raah-tastic book and CD edition of this bestselling Harry story read by Andrew Sachs. When Harry and the dinosaurs visit Mr. Oakley's farm and see some tiny ducklings hatching, they long to take one home. They wish and wish, but their wish doesn't come true. Summer passes and they pin all their hopes on a special Christmas wish."

The Story for Little Ones We used this book to recap on the birth of Jesus. "Now children can experience God’s great love story! The Story for Little Ones is filled with vibrant illustrations and simple text that bring 31 pivotal Bible stories, including Creation, David and Goliath, and the birth of Jesus to life for children. At the end of each story, a simple message will help children personalize and remember the greatest story ever told."

Jesus Calling Bible Storybook Another favorite to recap the advent story. "
Jesus is calling out to our hearts, and you can hear His voice in every story in the Bible. These carefully selected stories are paired with new children’s devotions from Sarah Young and will help young hearts understand God’s grand plan to send His Son, Jesus, to save His children and prepare a place for us in heaven. "

The Christmas Boot "Lonely Hannah is delighted to discover a warm black boot as she gathers kindling in the forest. A poor woman, she doesn't have proper shoes on her cold feet. More wishes bring even better gifts—but the best is still to come: A visitor arrives at her door—a man with a big white beard, wearing a red suit and only one boot. Who could this magical visitor be? Santa Claus, of course! And he has one more surprise in store for Hannah."

Flora and the Penguin  "Having mastered ballet in Flora and the Flamingo, Flora takes to the ice and forms an unexpected friendship with a penguin. Twirling, leaping, spinning, and gliding, on skates and flippers, the duo mirror each other's graceful dance above and below the ice. But when Flora gives the penguin the cold shoulder, the pair must figure out a way to work together for uplifting results. Artist Molly Idle creates an innovative, wordless picture book with clever flaps that reveal Flora and the penguin coming together, spiraling apart, and coming back together as only true friends do."

Walking in a Winter Wonderland "The classic and beloved winter holiday song "Walking in a Winter Wonderland" is brought to life with bright and colorful illustrations. Follow a family on their walk through snowy scenes. A beautiful and festive celebration of the season―perfect for sharing!"

A Christmas Carol "Take a walk with the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Yet to Come in Little Master Dickens’ A Christmas Carol: A BabyLit® Colors Primer. See old Jacob Marley shaking silver chains, gold stars shining around the Ghost of Christmas Past, and a red scarf keeping Tiny Tim warm. This bright retelling of a Christmas classic will scare any “bah, humbug” feelings away."
